Morning Dew

This image was taken early Saturday morning - just after the Sun came up. The subject is the dew on the window and a spider looking out the window - just watching the world go by. This exposure was taken at 1/90 second at F3.5.

Elephant

My wife wrapped up gifts this morning and placed them in an elephant bag - couldn't resist taking a couple of snaps of them. This exposure was taken is 1/8 second at F3.5. I used a tripod for the slower shutter speed in order to get a more shaper image and set the ISO to 64.

Parliament Hill, Ottawa

This is an image of Parliament Hill in Ottawa; Canada's national capital. It started to snow when I took this exposure - but it didn't last long. The exposure is 1/300 second at F5.6. I should of used a smaller F-stop such as F11.

This is an image of the The Bonsecours Market, located in old Montreal. The sun was low in the sky so the reflection on the dome is soft and not over exposure - however I find the sky is a bit plain. The exposure is 1/420 second at F5.6.

Mount Royal, Montreal

These images were taken on Mount Royal (French: Mont Royal) in Montreal, which is a mountain on the Island of Montreal, immediately north of downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada.I include the person in the image because I wanted to give a sense of scale to the scene. The exposure was taken at 1/125 second at F3.5.

The trees in this image help frame the shot of downtown Montreal. The exposure was taken at 1/340 second at F3.5.

The mountain is crowned by a 31.4 m (103 ft)-high illuminated cross, installed in 1924 by the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The image of the cross was taken at 1/340 second at F3.5.

Insects of Montreal

This series of images were taken over the Labour Day long weekend in Montreal:
This image was taken at 1/180 second at F4. I was photographing a falcon when I stumble upon the ladybug crawling across the fence.
Found this butterfly hanging around these beautiful yellow flowers. Image was taken at 1/400 second at F6.3.
I have no idea what this insect is called but it does look quite interesting - taken at 1/220 second at F4.5.
This last subject, the bumblebee, was the hardest since I am deafly afraid of them. The image was captured at 1/125 second at F3.5.

Direct Energy Building

This images was taken at the CNE - the building is called the Direct Energy Building. The exposure was taken on P-mode which resulted in a meter of 1/320 second at F5.6. The sun was low on the horizon which gave a nice reflection on the glass facade of the building.

Trees in the City

This exposure was taken last year in Montreal (Sept 4-2006) on automode which resulted in a metre of 1/100 second at F4 (taken with Canon A520). This image is interesting because of the uniformity of the trees and the angle makes it look like it never ends.

Unionville Jazz Festival

This was taken on Sunday August-19-2007 at the Unionville Jazz Festival. I didn't get the name of the artist but he played a great saxophone. This exposure was taken at 1/240 second at F3.5 with an ISO 200.

Wine Bottles

Exposure on this image was 1.3 seconds at F3.5 (which is the maximum aperture on my Fuji camera). I used three light sources and an off-white box for the background. I really like the reflections in the wine bottles - there is a lot of detail there. And if you look carefully you can see the top of my head - even though I used the timer and stepped back to avoid being in the reflection!

Toogood Pond

Spent the afternoon at Toogood Pond in Markham, looking for interesting images to take.
This first one is taken at 1/750 second at F3.5. The ducks were standing on the rocks and I walked around to get the right composition.
The second exposure was taken at 1/640 second at F11. It was taken in the direction of the sun so it would like twilight but it was late afternoon.

Peanut Butter News

This exposure was taken back in October 2006 on my Canon Powershot A520. The image was taken at 1/100 second at F4. I took this early Saturday morning just after the sun rose. I particular like the texture of the peanut butter.

Day at the Zoo

Spent today at the Metro Toronto Zoo with the family – it was a great day to be out until the downpour in the afternoon. Manage to take a half-dozen exposure. This image is of two giraffes trying to stay cool in the mid-day heat. I took this image in P-Mode, which resulted in a meter reading of 1/680 second at F6.8. Small adjustments were made using Paint.NET.

Garden Tomatoes

This exposure was taken on my Canon PowerShot A520, 1/25 sec at F2.6. I took this image last year in October 2007; the tomatoes were from my garden. The tomatoes look delicious but were very sour. This was probably one of my first still life that I liked. Hardest thing with still life photography is of course composition and figuring out how to correctly draw a viewer to the subject. I heard the following on subject while listening to a podcast on NYI Podcast

1. What is the subject of the photography?
2. How do I focus attention onto it?
3. How do I simplify it - remove any distracting elements?

I think I achieved that in this exposure.

My Yellow Car

Here’s my first post and the inspiration for the title of this blog. This particular exposure, taken on a Fuji FinePix S700 (1 second at F3.5, ISO 64 on Marco Mode) is one of my son’s favourite cars. My two year old son refers to the car as “My Yella Cars!”

I have stumbled upon the art of photography just after my son was born back in March 2005. And like all new Dads, I struggled to capture those magic moments – trying to make my images as great as some of the images I have seen on the web and in magazines. My goal of these posting is to share interesting exposures that I have taken and to get feedback on them (both positive and negative).

I hope you enjoyed this beginning.
